I am still learning the basics, so I keep getting lost on charts. There are so many lines and numbers on the screen at once. I want to know what a careful beginner looks at first, before worrying about any details.
I have read that some people start with the time frame, meaning whether the chart shows one day, one week, or one year. Others say they look at the volume bars at the bottom, or at the last few highs and lows. I am not sure which of these actually matters most, or whether the order even matters.
Could someone explain what your first two or three checks are, and why you pick those? I would like to hear what you were taught, or what you found helpful when you started learning.

When you first look at a stock chart, what do you check before anything else?
