Forex Market Hours

One significant forex market closes, while another opens. For example, GMT states that forex trading hours vary globally in the following ways: accessible in New York from 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM GMT, starting at 10:00 PM Sydney goes live; Tokyo opens at 0:00 am and closes at 9:00 am GMT; London opens at 8:00 am and closes at 5:00 pm GMT to complete the circle. This makes it possible for dealers and brokers to trade online around-the-clock, with the involvement of central banks from every continent.

More Activity, More Possibilities

Since the forex market is open around-the-clock, it’s critical to understand when trading is at its busiest. For example, Sydney will be open for trade but with less activity than the three major sessions (London, US, Tokyo) if we select a less active period between 5 pm and 7 pm EST, after New York closes and before Tokyo opens. Less activity therefore translates into fewer revenue opportunities. You will see more activity trading currency pairs such as EUR/USD, GBP/USD, or USD/CHF between 8 am and 12 pm, when trading is busy in both Europe and the US.

Alertness and Opportunity

The times at which official economic news and government reports are released are additional currency trading hours to be aware of. The governments set dates for these news releases, but they don’t coordinate the releases between the many nations.

Therefore, it is worthwhile to learn about the economic data released by the many main nations, as these correspond with the busiest times for forex trading. Larger possibilities in currency prices result from this increased activity, and occasionally orders are completed at prices that are different from what you had anticipated.

You as a trader have two primary choices: either choose to consciously stop trading during these times, or include the news periods into your forex trading hours. When prices abruptly shift during a news release, you should move proactively, regardless of the course of action you choose.

Trading Sessions

For day traders the most productive hours are between the opening of the London markets at 08:00 GMT and the closing of the US markets at 22:00 GMT. The peak time for trading is when the US and London markets overlap between 1 pm GMT – 4 pm GMT. The main sessions of the day are the London, US and Asian markets. Below is a brief overview of trading sessions that will help you make the most of the market: LONDON SESSION – open between 8 am GMT – 5 pm GMT; EUR, GBP, USD are the most active currencies; US SESSION – open between 1 pm GMT – 10 pm GMT; USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, JPY are the most active currencies; ASIAN SESSION – opens at about 10 pm GMT on Sunday afternoon, goes into the European trading session at about 9 am GMT; not very suitable for day trading.
